Job Summary
The Certified Flagger is responsible for directing the flow of traffic through a construction zone or around a road hazard. The primary goal is to maintain a safe environment for both the public and the workers. This role requires certification recognized by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT).
Key Responsibilities
  • Traffic Control: Direct motorists using "Stop/Slow" paddles and hand signals in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Communication: Coordinate with other flaggers and the site supervisor via two-way radios or visual signals to ensure traffic flows smoothly from both directions.
  • Equipment Setup: Assist in the placement and removal of traffic control devices such as cones, barrels, and signage.
  • Public Safety: Warn construction workers when an approaching vehicle fails to slow down or enters a restricted area.
  • Observation: Monitor the flow of traffic and adjust positions to ensure maximum visibility for approaching drivers.
Requirements & Qualifications
1. Certification
  • Must possess a valid NDDOT Flagger Certification card.
  • Note: North Dakota typically recognizes certifications from the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) or National Safety Council (NSC).
2. Physical Demands
  • Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods (often 8–12 hours) in various weather conditions.
  • Climate Resilience: North Dakota weather is extreme; you must be prepared for intense heat, high winds, and freezing temperatures.
  • Mobility: Ability to move quickly to avoid errant vehicles if necessary.
3. Skills
  • Focus: High level of situational awareness; distractions like cell phones are strictly prohibited while on duty.
  • Communication: Clear, professional, and firm communication style when dealing with frustrated or confused motorists.
  • Punctuality: Construction schedules are rigid; being on time is non-negotiable.
